Welcome to the National Historic Cheesemaking Center
and the Green County Welcome Center
The National Historic Cheesemaking Museum is located at the southern gateway to Wisconsin, just a few miles north of the Illinois/Wisconsin line. Our staff eagerly awaits your visit to tell you the story of early cheesemaking which earned Monroe the title of the "Cheese Capital of the USA."
During your visit, step inside the century old Imobersteg Cheese Factory.
Mark your calendar to join Master Cheesemakers, Saturday, June 8th, and take a turn stirring the kettle as it was done over 100 years ago. Watch, right before your eyes, as a 90 pound wheel of Swiss cheese is completed on the press table.
Join the fun of music, displays, alphorn blowers and treat yourself to a Master Grilled Cheese Sandwich. Then top it off with a freshly
baked Cream Puff with real whipped cream and beverages available throughout the day.
View a complete listing of events and times that our delectable sandwiches and cream puffs are available throughout the year at events and in Downtown Monroe, in the FAQs.
